About
Freshwater waterlogged forests, or flooded forests, permanently or seasonally submerged with fresh water. They usually occur in the lower reaches of rivers and in the vicinity of freshwater lakes.
Ratargul Wetland Forest is the only freshwater wetland forest in Bangladesh.
Ratargul waterlogged forest is located in the Gowainghat area of Sylhet. This forest is inundated with water from the hills of India only during the monsoon season and creates waterlogging.
Other times, it stays dry. The water of this beautiful forest is so clear that you can see the level below. The water level above this forest is never at the same level. It depends on the amount of rainfall.
The water level in the water can be 15-25 feet during heavy rains. The total area of the forest is 3325..61 acres, out of which 504 acres of forest was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 19503.
The main trees of this forest are zigzag style Karch and hijal trees. The roots of these trees have two levels. One is on the ground and the other is in the middle layer which is used during floods during monsoons.
If one looks at this forest during the rainy season, one can think that these trees are born above the water due to the medium level roots. Wildlife includes monkeys, snakes, frogs, and a variety of birds.
4 months is the best time to explore the forest during the rainy season. You can rent a local wooden boat and go for a walk and relax in the forest all day.
Other times there will be no water in the forest, and you have to walk in the mud. If you want to spend the whole day in the Sylhet section, Ratargul waterlogged forest is the best place for it.
