About Sonadia Island
Sonadia Island, along the southeastern coast of Bangladesh, is a small, unconventional oasis in one of the world’s most densely populated countries. The sand dunes continue on an entire coast.
There are huge patches of mangroves and salt swamps, the last remainders of the mangrove woods that once extended along the Chittagong coastline. The array of wildlife here is amazing.
These include green, hawkbill and olive ridley sea turtles, abundant fish species, and at least four globally endangered dolphins. There are at least 70 species of migratory birds, including the Eurasian Carleau. Ireland The same species is protected by the Psychology Project halfway across Ireland!
The project will save 8,000 acres of land on the island’s coast, including mangroves, mudflats, and seas. The communities (2,500 in three villages) have agreed to stop hunting birds and collecting turtle eggs. They will also remove illegal fishing gears, which trap mangrove canals and trap sea turtles.
MarineLife Alliance Bangladesh was our NGO partner in the successful St.Martin Island project. The MLA has been working for the education and conservation of sea turtles in the region since 2004.
Will work with members of the widow community to observe the beach during the turtle nesting season. Homestead sites are ancient, which is unique in Bangladesh. About 350 to 400 women settle there every year.
The government has declared the island an ecotourism site, so visitors should be encouraged. A Psychology grant will fund the first mangrove education center in Bangladesh.
The center will educate both tourists and community members about the importance of the mangrove ecosystem. It will also provide income for local people who have very few livelihood options.
